As most people in the coffee industry will tell you, Grinding your coffee beans is the single most important thing that you will be called to do, unless you are a roaster.
What does coffee grind have to do with the perfect cup of coffee, espresso or pourover. EVERYTHING.
Let's start with the basics
Start with freshly roasted coffee. We recommend coffee that has been roasted within the last 3 days. Make sure that you weigh out the proper amount on coffee for the amount of water that you intend on using.
Next select the proper grind setting for the kind of drink that you are going to prepare. Here is where so many people start to sputter out and ruin what likely could have been a beautiful experience.
Grind is the bed where hot water and precious coffee bean meet. If you don't prepare the coffee for the water, it's like a disaster waiting to happen, in your mouth. If your grounds are too fine your drink may be too strong, grinds too course and the drink will be too weak. If your grinds are irregular in shape, as with an everyday blade grinder and you are just taking your chances.
We recommend investing in a burr grinder. A burr grinder is able to give you not only a consistent grind but with today's adjustable burr grinders you are able to dial in the size of the grind that you want.
Let's say that you would like to drink a pressed pot of coffee. Dial your burr grinder to the course setting. Grind your beans, spoon out the desired amount of coffee into your press (2tbl/cup) of water Add your boiling hot water. Wait 4 minutes, press down the press pots top and voila you have the perfect cup of coffee.
Remember: start with fresh coffee beans, select the proper grind, water, time and satisfaction is just around the corner.
