Q. I want to get a bolder coffee. How can I get more "Boldness" out of coffee?
A. When you're talking about "Boldness" in a cup of coffee, we have to clarify what you really mean. In this case the customer wanted to know how to get that "Kick in the mouth" feeling when he first sipped on a cup. The answer to getting more boldness isn't in finding a darker roast of coffee. It will give you a "kick" as far as taste goes but that isn't always good.
Coffee has a natural sweet spot in it. Just like a good steak or a really well done pie. If you overcook a steak or you under bake a pie you miss the "sweet spot" you are looking for. This is the same thing that happens with coffee.
Most roasters will agree that roasting beans "Medium" is where the sweet spot is for coffee beans. So over roasting them by taking them to "Dark" or even Espresso roast will give you the kick you are looking for but at the expense of great flavor.
We suggest that to get a bolder flavor out of your coffee that you do something really pretty simple. Just add more coffee to your usual dosage of coffee. This will give you more "Flavor" in your cup and that is really what you are looking for. You aren't looking for "Burnt" you are looking for more "Flavor".
